From November to April, Taking Root’s community technicians collect the seeds required for the coming year’s nurseries. These seeds are retrieved from local farmers to ensure the trees are well adapted to the region.
Due to the increased scale of the project, which covers the entire municipality of Limay, 485.8 square kilometers, the technicians must now gather seeds from outside the project boundary. This has created a new market for members of these communities who receive direct benefits from the project by gathering and selling seeds.
In the coming years Taking Root will continue to work with different communities to collect seeds, both within and outside of the project boundary – strengthening relationships and creating opportunities for them while building its own seed bank, and ensuring access to an adequate supply of indigenous seeds in the long-run.
