Taking Root leverages crowdfunding to create documentary on benefits of social reforestation

While maybe not a term you’ve heard before, social reforestation is a way of using trees to restore ecosystems, tackle climate change and improve livelihoods of some of the world’s poorest farmers. This is the mission of Montreal-based non-profit Taking Root, who has just launched a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo.com to explain social reforestation and why the rest of the world should care about it.

In the campaign video, Taking Root’s Communications Coordinator, Brooke van Mossel-Forrester, explains that, “in the face of issues like poverty, deforestation and the human-caused climate change… there’s hope.” The organization’s social reforestation project offers incredible potential to help address these alarming issues, “and the world needs to know about it.”

This coming June, Taking Root will work with hundreds of small-scale farmers in Nicaragua to plant over 400,000 trees, bringing its total in just 6 years to almost a million trees. To document this incredible milestone, the organization has collaborated with Montreal photographer and videographer Chris Henschel to launch the crowdfunding campaign.

Until June 21st, supporters can help fund this initiative by donating to the Taking Root Documentary Project on Indiegogo.com, and they can choose from a selection of fun rewards in return. Donations will cover the cost of sending Henschel to the project in San Juan de Limay, Nicaragua, and of producing a series of high-quality, educational videos that will show the world the great impact of social reforestation both locally and globally.

“Our hope,” explains van Mossel-Forrester, “is to get people’s attention and help them think about how our actions can impact others around the world, both positively and negatively. By choosing to reduce our environmental footprint and support community-based initiatives like Taking Root’s, we’re securing a better planet for future generations.”
