July 12, 2016 – Taking Root has been selected as a 2016 Finalist in the Fuller Challenge, a prestigious competition that provides the “Socially-Responsible Design’s Highest Award”. Each year since 2007, the Buckminster Fuller Institute invites scientists, designers, architects, activists, entrepreneurs, artists and planners from all over the world to submit their innovative solutions to some of humanity’s most pressing problems. A $100,000 prize is awarded to support the development and implementation of one outstanding strategy.
Taking Root is honoured to be selected, along with 19 other proposals, from hundreds of applications that were submitted from over 100 countries. As part of the application, Taking Root outlined the CommuniTree Project, a comprehensive reforestation and carbon sequestration strategy that creates powerful front-line partnerships with smallholders and their land.
“Buckminster Fuller was driven to make the world work for 100% of humanity, in the shortest possible time without ecological offense or the disadvantage of anyone, by using whole systems thinking, scientific rigor, and faithful reliance on nature’s underlying principles. These principles align with the Taking Root approach and we are honoured to be selected as finalists in this inspirational challenge,” explains Kahlil Baker, Taking Root’s executive Director. Nineteen proposals, including Taking Root’s, have been selected as Semi-finalists after rigorous review for adherence to the seven-point Challenge criteria: Visionary, Comprehensive, Ecologically Responsible, Feasible, Verifiable, and Replicable. Our application has been through three rounds of vetting by the members of the Challenge Review Committee, including analysis and evaluation by an interdisciplinary team of experts and advisors.
“Each of these projects deserve the attention of the world for their commitment to ‘solving for system’ – an approach that takes an unusual degree of insight, patience, tenacity and courage”, said Elizabeth Thompson, The Buckminster Fuller Institute’s Executive Director. “The teams behind these initiatives have made extraordinary efforts to define the systemic context underlying the problem they are seeking to solve, and have designed strategies that provide enduring and sustainable solutions. Each is a remarkable example of the transformative power of individual initiative and provide much needed hope by demonstrating that solutions to our most entrenched problems are indeed at hand.”
The winner will be announced in September.
About Taking Root
Taking Root is a pioneer in leveraging the forest carbon offset industry to promote economic development amongst smallholder farmers in Central America. As a not for profit, our mission is to use reforestation as a tool to mitigate climate change, restore ecosystems and improve livelihoods. This is achieved by encouraging smallholder-farming families to reforest the under-utilized parts of their farms using native tree species in exchange for direct payments over time as the trees sequester carbon from the atmosphere. These carbon sequestration services are then marketed and sold directly within Canada and through channel partnerships in Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, England, the USA and Spain.
